Description

I enjoy hunting down these faint Arp galaxies and this one is very interesting. These can be found high up in Draco. There are 2 Arp's in this field. Arp 310 is IC1259, a close pair of galaxies, whilst Arp 311 actually includes Arp 310 but adds IC1258 and IC1260. IC1259 is the more Northerly pair of pec galaxies, coming in at mag. 15.2 and mag. 14.3, both are pretty tiny, sub arc min. examples. IC 1258 is a spiral galaxy of mag. 14.8, whilst IC1260 is a compact galaxy, mag. 15.7. The distance to these Arps is a staggering 375 MLy.

Halton Arp hinted at a bridge of material joining IC1259 and IC1258 but there is no sign of it in my image.

What Arp didn't comment on and what I find more interesting is the presence of at least one quasar very close to IC1259. I've anotated it as Q9.6, about 2 or 3 arc mins N of IC1259. A distance of 9.6 Billion Light Years places this quasar a very, very long way from IC1259. I've also anotated several other quasars in the image, most of them with even higher redshift. You may have to take my word for it but they are there! The one at d=5.3 BLy appears to be not a point source as most quasars are.

There are additionally hundreds of more distant galaxies spread right across this image, too many for me to even begin to identify.

My image taken on a night of exceptional clarity last month, is the result of 30 x 3 minute sub exposures through my 10" f4.8 Reflector. The camera was a SXH9C OSC ccd camera, with an IR/UV filter. Image acquired using AstroArt3, processed in AA3 and PixInsight.
